What's New

Dear Migrant Education Community,

The Office of Migrant Education (OME) would like to announce an update to the upcoming 2009 OME Conference to be held next week in San Diego, California.

Dr. Thelma Meléndez de Santa Ana, Assistant Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education, regrettably will not be able to join us.  However, Mr. Juan Sepúlveda, Director of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans, will conduct the OME Conference’s Listening Session regarding migrant issues as they relate to reauthorization.  Because of his extremely tight schedule, the listening session has been rescheduled and will now take place from 11 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, October 27th in the Golden West Ballroom.

Mr. Sepúlveda is the senior executive, strategist and advocate responsible for directing the efforts of the White House Initiative in engaging Hispanic students,   parents, families, organizations and anyone working in or with the education system in communities nationwide as active participants in improving the academic achievement of Hispanic Americans.   To facilitate the drafting of the new executive order and to reintroduce itself to the nation, the White House Initiative has been hosting a series of “Community Conversations” at various venues across the country.     These events are open dialogues between Mr. Sepúlveda and the White House Initiative staff and members of local communities.

We are honored that Mr. Sepúlveda is joining our Conference.

I look forward to seeing you next week.  As always, I thank you for the many ways, big and small, that you contribute to the betterment of the lives of migrant children and their families.

Sincerely,

Lisa R. Ramírez, Ed. D.
